Worcestershire sauce is one of the most popular condiments in English cuisine. It is distinguished by a characteristic spicy taste and a unique smell. It turns out that the recipe and method of preparing this sauce has been known in the UK for over 100 years. It goes best with beef dishes, and more and more often we can also find it in salads. What to replace Worcestershire sauce with?

If we want to go easy, as a substitute for Worcestershire sauce, we can use a mixture of soy sauce and fish sauce (1: 1 ratio), a pinch of sugar (preferably brown) and a bit of vinegar (e.g. apple).

The second quick alternative to Worcestershire sauce is a 1:1 ratio of fish and oyster sauce along with a bit of vinegar and mustard (preferably something mild/sweet). However, let’s face it, obtaining a similar taste of the sauce will be very difficult with the use of a small amount of products, because the original sauce consists of a very large number of ingredients

It is worth knowing that this unique sauce with a sweet and sour taste is based on an original recipe from the 1830s. It is prepared from over 25 different ingredients, thanks to which it owes its spicy aroma.

The basis of this English classic is primarily malt vinegar, which is obtained from barley, as well as molasses and a combination of sugar and salt.

What’s more, in addition to the basic ingredients, Worcestershire sauce also includes: anchovies – better known as anchovies, onion, shallot, garlic, ginger, celery, asafoetida, tamarind extract, as well as lemon juice and a mixture of various spices such as nutmeg. nutmeg or bay leaves.

Worcestershire sauce is most often combined with dishes served hot, in which beef meat dominates. It should not be forgotten that it is also the basic ingredient of the extremely popular drink with the graceful name Bloody Mary. So can it be replaced?

Worcestershire sauce – substitute for everyone

A replacement for Worcestershire sauce is not an obvious product at all. It turns out that not only is it extremely difficult to replace this sauce, but what is more, we will not find a ready-made product on the market that could imitate the taste of the original sauce.

Nevertheless, Worcestershire sauce and its substitute can of course be prepared at home, not forgetting that the original product matures for a long time and is fermented in special oak barrels, even for several months. Therefore, it should be taken into account that the substitute for Worcestershire sauce will never taste the same as the original.

Worcestershire Sauce – Recipe for a substitute to prepare at home

If we decided to prepare a substitute for Worcestershire sauce at home, we will first need the following products:

  • about two cups of malt vinegar
  • about 100 ml of soy sauce
  • tamarind paste – 5 tbsp
  • a glass of dark beer
  • molasses – 80 ml
  • onion
  • shallot
  • chilli pepper
  • 2-3 cloves of garlic
  • a piece of ginger
  • French mustard – 2 tbsp
  • cloves
  • anchovy
  • half a teaspoon of cardamom
  • half a teaspoon of curry
  • cinnamon
  • lemon juice
  • vegetable oil – about two, large spoons,
  • salt – about 2-3 tbsp

Once we have the harvested products, we can start preparing the substitute for Worcestershire sauce. Start by chopping the onions, shallots and garlic cloves as finely as possible. In a small saucepan, heat the vegetable oil well, then fry the chopped ingredients for about 2-3 minutes until well browned.

The last step is to add all the other ingredients and mix them well. Reduce the heat and let the ingredients cook for about 2 hours. After the time has elapsed, the finished Worcestershire sauce can be poured into jars and stored in the refrigerator.
